In particular, engineers in the construction field who graduated from Yeungnam University are earning a good reputation and acknowledgement for their job performance, devotion to their roles, and distinct sociability. In the Civil Engineering program, students are advised to choose the right career path based on their capability and aptitude. In addition, they are instructed to follow the systematic curriculum with writing undergraduate thesis that will help achieve their career goals. In order to enhance the quality of engineering education, our curriculum is operated and controlled under the Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK) system that provides professional recommendations and guidelines for undergraduate programs. By continuously updating academic contents and program directions, the Department of Civil Engineering is moving forward to meet the needs of rapidly changing industries and future innovations.
History
Currently, over 5,000 undergraduates, 400 master's and 60 PhDs graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering to play pivotal roles in the national development from various different social levels.

Civil engineers can be employed in various fields such as public corporations at national and provincial levels, central government or local authorities, engineering companies, construction companies, financial institutes, public policy research institutes at national and local levels, etc.

- Introduces classical mechanics. Space and time: straight-line kinematics; motion in a plane; forces and equilibrium; experimental basis of Newton's laws; particle dynamics; universal gravitation; collisions and conservation laws; work and potential energy; vibrational motion; conservative forces; inertial forces and non-inertial frames; central force motions; rigid bodies and rotational dynamics.
1- 1 - SEMINAR FOR ACADEMIC LIFE
- 1. Summary of the course This course is to assist university freshmen in CRM designing to adapt university life well through the instruction and counselling of supervising professor. (This course is composed of self analysis, personality type test, career research, instruction for the success of university life, career plan and direction setting, CRM designing method and CRM designing. The course should be teaching in classes of the students by supervising professor.) 2. Course objectives This course is to motivate the students before the mid term exam and provide students with self analysis, personality type test (MBTI or TCI) and career research (YAT test). Also, this course shall has a plan to instruct the students to enhance the efficiency of university life through career and time management. In addition, this course is to make a chance for the students to have practical assistance to university life by providing study method, report designing strategy and the information on academic system and various kinds of internal programs of the university. After the mid term exam, the students will be instructed to set the direction of career designing through continuous counselling of supervising professor and the students will be able to establish CRM designing and execution plan.
1- 1 - SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION AND SERVICE
- This course is to cultivate community sense as members of society and the global village for students in order to develop the basic knowledge required as global citizens. Especially, this course is to foster the spirit of cooperation, sharing, service, and creativity and study the social contribution and leadership to solving the challenges the global community faces. As a liberal arts course, it is centered to nurture a leader having the global capability to contribute to community development through learning the knowledge and the case on the value & logic of social responsibility focused on environmental preservation, social contribution, and good governance(ESG). This course aims to foster a generous mind, learn knowledge and technology and build the capacity to contribute to building a society towards a safer and happier world through the study of theory and practice.
1- 1 - SOFTWARE AND AI
- Software and AI (Artificial Intelligence) course aims to educate the basic concepts of software and computational thinking to use them in various applications. It allows students of various majors to experience the core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, such as big data, machine learning, and AI. It also introduces various applications of AI so that students can easily apply these technologies to their field of study. This course classifies the lecture types into three categories, and adjust the lecture difficulty according to the student's academic ability.
1- 1 - STATISTICS(1)
- This course defines events and probabilities, conditional probabilities and independence to evaluate probabilities. Elementary probability distributions such as binomial distribution, geometric distribution, Poisson distribution, and normal distribution are also introduced. The concepts of sample distribution of the statistic and the central limit theorem are introduced. The statistical inference including estimation and hypothesis testing of the mean and the standard deviation will be discussed.
1- 1 - INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING DESIGN
- This subject invokes the interests of freshman engineer to engineering prior to regular engineering subjects. Creative problem solving skills are taught in the class such as brain storming, generation, analysis, practice, evaluation, and improvement of idea through minimum theory and various design projects, etc. Various projects for visual thinking and drawing, power writing skills, model bridge design, are carried out to operate, evaluate the performance of students on group base competition and thus enhances teamwork and communication skills. By taking this course, freshmen begin to have interests in engineering design and can develop creative problem solving skill, and eventually develop strong desire to continue engineering career.
1- 2 - CALCULUS I
- Calculus(1) covers the following: Sequences, limits and continuity of functions of single variable, derivatives, properties of derivatives, differentiation rules, higher order derivatives, applications of derivatives, definite integrals, indefinite integrals, properties of integrals, integration rules, applications of integrals, infinite series power series.
1- 2 - PYTHON PROGRAMMING
- The core competencies required in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is the ability to come up with idea for solving a given problem and realize it in software. In this course, as the first step this, we will learn Python programming language. This course aims to cultivate basic programming skills and problem-solving skills based on creative thinking. The topics covered in this course are as follows. - Python language grammar (basic and advanced levels) - Python library for GUI programming (tkinter) - Python library for image processing (pillow) - Python libraries for data analysis (Matplotlib, Numpy, and Pandas)
1- 2 - SPECIALIZED ACADEMIC ENGLISH
- The aim of the course is to help students increase their fluency and accuracy in English. The course will be co-taught by Korean and Native English instructors. Korean instructors will provide students with an opportunity to practice English structure, vocabulary, and expressions, and students will be encouraged to enhance their verbal skills by actively participating in classroom activities. Students will further practice expressing themselves in English with native English instructors.
1- 2 - INTRODUCTION TO CIVIL ENGINEERING
- This course introduces basis of civil engineering, infrastructure, and construction industry. The course includes history of civil engineering and civil engineering disciplines such as planning, engineering, construction, and maintenance. It also provides basic introduction of civil infrastructures such as road, railway, airport, harbor, bridge, tunnel, water resource facilities, and environmental facilities.

- Mathematics for civil engineers including first and second order ordinary differential equations, matrices, linear algebra and vector calculus.
2- 1 - NUMERICAL ANALYSIS
- Numerical analysis is a blend of mathematics and computer science that has produced powerful tools for solving intractable problems in science and engineering. This course covers error analysis, solution of equations of one variable, interpolation and polynomial approximation, numerical integration and differentiation, numerical solution of initial problems, direct & iterative methods for solving linear systems, solutions of systems of nonlinear equations, approximation theory and approximating eigenvalues, and numerical methods for partial differential equations.
2- 1 - FLUID MECHANICS
- This lecture introduces the basic principles of fluid mechanics and analysis framework including physical characteristics of fluid, analysis basis for open channel flows and pipe flows such as Euler's equation to promote the basic knowledge regarding fluid mechanics.
2- 1 - MECHANICS OF MATERIALS
- Lectures on the concept of stress and strain for tension, compression and shear, Hook's law, Mohr's circle, combined stress, strain energy, beams, columns, shafts and continuous beams, deflections, shear and moment diagrams, etc.
2- 1 - SURVEYING & PRACTICE
- Surveying Practice is related to the course Elementary Surveying. Introduction to geometric geodesy. Least squares adjustments in surveying. The theory and use of surveying instruments. Traverse, Triangulation and area computation methods and surveying practice as they relate to elementary civil engineering applications. Applied surveying topics including construction surveying, highway geometric design and elementary photogrammetry.
2- 2 - CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS & LABORATORY
- This subject presents the characteristics of construction materials and makes students know how to use the materials properly.
2- 2 - GEOGRAPHIC AND SPATIAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS
- This subject consists of elementary remote sensing, photogrammetry, and GIS. This subject will assist the student in more fully understanding the geospatial properties and characteristics, and applied computation of geographic data.
2- 2 - HIGHWAY ENGINEERING
- This subject consists of highway history, kinds, planning, inventory survey, traffic volume, design of highway earth work, etc. This subject will assist the student in more fully understanding the planning, survey, design and construction of highway facilities.
2- 2 - HYDRAULICS AND EXPERIMENTS
- Introduction to fluid statics, kinematics, and dynamic theory, Strengthen theory application capability by introducing practical examples. Introduction to similitudes and dimensional analysis, and basic theories for steady & uniform flow analysis through both pipeline and open-channels. Strengthen theory application capability by practical example exercises and laboratory experiments.
2- 2 - SOIL MECHANICS I
- The course deals with the basic properties of soil, the engineering classification of soil, the structure and characteristics of clay minerals, the concept of effective stress, the seepage through the soil and the shear strength of soil.
2- 2 - STRUCTURAL MECHANICS I
- As a part of applied mechanics, structural mechanics that is based on the principle of statics deals with internal force and deformation due to external load carried by structural elements. Analysis for statically determinate structures.

3- 1 - CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT
- The construction activities need the methods of improving the quality, while at the same time reducing the costs. This subject consists of instruction period, cost, and quality managements.
3- 1 - ELEMENTARY HYDROLOGY
- Understanding and analysis of the hydrological cycle of water including precipitation, evapotranspiration, infiltration, and runoff.
3- 1 - REINFORCED CONCRETE
- The behavior, basic principles, analysis and design concepts of reinforced concrete structures are studied and application to slab, beam, column, footing and retaining walls is presented.
3- 1 - SOIL MECHANICS II
- This course deals with the stress increase with in the soil, the compression and consolidation theory of soil, the earth pressure acting on the earth-retaining structure and the slope stability, etc.
3- 1 - STRUCTURAL MECHANICS II
- Analysis for statically indeterminate structures. Continuous beams and frame analysis.
3- 2 - FIELD EDUCATION PRACTICEⅠ
- This course deals with comprehensive civil engineering field works. Students must prepare and present written reports for their experience.
3- 2 - SITE INVESTIGATION & SOIL TEST
- This course deals with the site investigation and laboratory tests on soils. The site investigation includes boring, sampling, standard penetration tests, cone penetration tests, pressuremeter test, vane tests, geophysical survey, etc. This course deals with the analysis method of results of site investigations. The laboratory tsests of permeability, oedometer, direct share, triaxial compression, compaction and CBR are experienced.
3- 2 - STEEL STRUCTURES
- Introduction of steel structures; Material properties; Research and Design of structural steel members; Structural behavior of tension, compression, flexural members, beam-column, and plate girder; Behavior of rigid connection, hinge connection and semi-rigid connection; Load and resistance factor design of structural members.
3- 2 - TEACHING MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES FOR ENGINEERING EDUCATION
- Selected formulations of instruction and teaching-learning process applicable to technical high school and general high school based on curriculum for the subject of technical education. Also this lecture provides opportunity for the student to make teaching plan, teaching materials and evaluation, teaching method, and skills in the field to improve attainments as a teacher of high school.
3- 2 - APPLIED HYDROLOGY
- Analysis and management of surface water in watersheds for design rainfall estimation, hydrograph analysis and synthesis, hydrologic and hydraulic flood routing, water budget analysis and water resources planning, and hydrologic modeling techniques.
3- 2 - CIVIL ENGINEERING CONSTRUCTION
- This lecture will assist the student in more fully understanding the construction industry. This subject consists of construction equipment, earth and concrete works, Tunneling, and ground improvement.
3- 2 - COMPUTER STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS
- Matrix algebra, basic concept of stiffness and flexibility, Maxwell`s reciprocal theorem. Displacement method, force method, and direct stiffness method are applied to spring, truss, beam, and frame structures. Concentrated and distributed loads analysis. Computer implementation.
3- 2 - PRESTRESSED CONCRETE
- Introducing behavior, basic principle, analysis, and design of prestressed concrete structures. Particular behavior due to prestressing and application to bridge construction.

4- 1 - INTRODUCTION TO THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY AND JOB MARKETS
- This course introduces contemporary issues on the construction industry and projects for understanding the domestic industrial scene, and provides key information on technician licenses and job markets for preparing professional engineers.
4- 1 - LAWS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING
- Build up a capability as a field engineer by introducing the related law for the SOC construction(road, agricultural land, forest land, river, and etc.) and understanding the official approval/permission process in SOC development.
4- 1 - RIVER ENGINEERING AND DESIGN
- Introducing the concepts of river examination, planning, design, construction, and maintenance for waterway, fish-way, embankment, barriers, bank revetments, etc. Strengthen a capability as a river engineer by introducing examples of practical applications.
4- 1 - FOUNDATION ENGINEERING
- This course deals with the bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundation including mat foundation, the lateral earth pressure and the retaining wall. This course also deals with the bearing capacity and settlement of pile foundation, the bearing capacity of pier, the strutted excavation, the design of sheet pile wall and the ground improvement technique. etc.
4- 2 - COMPUTATIONAL GEOTECHNICS
- Main topics include computer application and analysis onto soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering: interpretation on the data from laboratory tests and site investigations with work spreadsheets, analyses on consolidation, seepage, retaining walls, excavation, piles and slope stability problems. The mathematical theories and concepts on finite difference method are included and the case history on finite element method is introduced.
4- 2 - CREATIVE ENGINEERING CLINIC Ⅱ
- Experience all process of the project with applying the student's knowledge of engineering topics to the real world project.
4- 2 - DESIGN OF HYDRAULIC STRUCTURES
- Introduction of hydrologic & hydraulic analysis methods essential for the designing and evaluating hydrologic & hydraulic structures. Strengthen a theory application capability by introducing examples of practical application.
4- 2 - FIELD TECHNIQUES OF CONSTRUCTION SITE MANAGEMENT
- This course is operated in the form of a lecture in partnership with industry. Especially, the course focuses on the latest trends and new technologies, focusing on on - site management techniques that occur in civil engineering construction sites.
4- 2 - HARBOUR ENGINEERING
- Introducing wave theories for analysis of wind wave, currents, tsunami, and tide. Design and operation/maintenance for harbor and coastal structures.
4- 2 - LOGICAL THINKING AND WRITING SKILLS IN ENGINEERING
- In this course, the students in educational study for engineering field will be trained about logical thinking and writing abilities.
